The Trompe l’Oeil Laurel IOD Paint Inlay by Iron Orchid Designs is the neutral, tone-on-tone companion to the beloved Trompe l’Oeil Bleu — a 4-sheet collection rendered in a whisper-soft grey-and-white palette that evokes the look of hand-carved plaster relief or antique grisaille painting. Sweeping laurel garland swags in two tonal weights, six coordinating horizontal border stripes, and a breathtaking large-scale grey rose medallion combine to create a collection that works beautifully on any painted surface, from the palest linen white to the deepest charcoal.

Imagine a soft grey dresser dressed in continuous laurel swags across its top, each drawer front accented with a coordinating border stripe, and the center panel anchored by a lush grey rose medallion that looks as though it was carved directly into the wood. The Trompe l’Oeil Laurel inlay makes that vision achievable in an afternoon — and because the pigment stays active until sealed, you can blend, layer, and soften each impression to achieve the depth and tonal variation of a true hand-painted grisaille finish.

• Sheet 1 (Page 01): Laurel swag garlands — three horizontal repeating swags of delicate grey-white laurel branches with tassel-tipped ends and central leaf clusters; lightest, most ethereal tone
• Sheet 2 (Page 02): Laurel swag garlands — three horizontal repeating swags in a slightly deeper warm grey tone, with more defined shadow and dimension for tonal layering and contrast
• Sheet 3 (Page 03): Botanical border stripes — six horizontal repeating border stripes in two styles: a delicate open-leaf laurel swag (top three, light to mid grey) and a fuller, more structured symmetrical leaf-and-stem border with central bead accent (bottom three, mid to warm grey)
• Sheet 4 (Page 04): Grey rose medallions — two large oval medallions, each featuring a lush bouquet of full-bloom grey roses, peonies, and buds framed by a delicate laurel wreath with ribbon-tied base; soft warm grey and taupe tones with subtle depth

Application Tips

• Apply to wet chalk-type paint for best adhesion; work in 12" × 16" sections, generally not larger than 12" × 16"
• Spritz lightly with an even mist of water; using a damp sponge or folded soft cloth, pat down with even light pressure — avoid dragging the sheet once laid down
• Peel gently from one corner at a low angle; if it does not come up easily, spritz a second time and wait a moment, then try again
• Blend or soften with a damp cloth while pigment is still active; additional colors can be added at this stage
• Important: IOD Paint Inlays will appear a shade or two lighter before sealing and will darken a bit when sealed — for tone-on-tone colorways like Laurel, test on a scrap first to ensure enough contrast against your background color
• Seal with a water-based liquid sealer in a 50/50 sealer/water dilution spritzed with a fine spray bottle, or brush on your finish of choice; minimum two coats recommended
