Inspired by the legendary wallpapers of Jean-Baptiste Réveillon — entrepreneur de la Manufacture Royale de Papiers Peints and supplier to the Palais des Tuileries — this collection captures the full splendor of late Louis XVI botanical ornament: cascading rose garlands, leaping stags, singing songbirds, towering pine trees, berry-and-leaf wreaths, and sinuous Rococo acanthus scrolls, all rendered in a warm, painterly palette of terracotta, blush, sage, and cream.

La Folie — French for “The Folly” — evokes the ornamental garden pavilions of the French aristocracy, where every surface was a canvas for botanical fantasy. Eight generous 12”×16” sheets give you a complete vocabulary of Réveillon-inspired ornament, from full-length climbing garland columns to elaborate cartouche compositions, ready to transform any painted surface into something that feels like a private château.

Picture a painted armoire paneled with alternating garland columns and cartouche compositions — leaping stags flanking a rose-wreathed medallion on one door, a pair of songbirds in berry-circle wreaths above a pine-tree tableau on the other — the whole composition evoking the boiserie of a French salon. Or imagine a single sheet of climbing garlands applied to a tall cabinet, transforming it into a pillar of botanical splendor.

What’s Included

8 sheets of paint inlay, each 12” × 16”

Sheet 1 – Chateau La Folie Cartouche: central composition with three towering pine trees flanked by terracotta ribbon-and-rose garland columns; “Chateau La Folie · 1789·” script title; symmetrical acanthus-and-scroll wing cartouche with central rose bouquet; four rose corner sprigs; “La Folie · 1789·” watermark script

Sheet 2 – Paris Medallion & Garlands: large arched acanthus-and-scroll crown with central rose bouquet; two full-length climbing rose-and-berry garland columns; pair of songbirds flanking “· Paris ·” script; large berry-and-leaf wreath with central rose bouquet and terracotta ribbon bow; “· 1789 ·” script

Sheet 3 – Réveillon Manufacture Royale: full-sheet rose-and-berry corner garland frame; two songbirds-in-berry-circle wreaths (mirrored pair); “Mémoire pour le sieur Réveillon, entrepreneur de la manufacture royale de papiers peints” script inscription; lower composition of two songbirds flanking pine trees with rose bouquet and scrollwork; four rose corner sprigs; “Fabrique De Papiers Peints” script

Sheet 4 – Five Garland Columns: full sheet of five distinct full-length climbing garland columns — (1) dark rose-and-leaf, (2) blush rose-and-leaf, (3) delicate berry-and-bud, (4) terracotta rose-and-berry, (5) mixed rose-and-berry — for use as pilasters, column borders, or vertical accent strips

Sheet 5 – La Folie Stag Cartouche: two full-length ribbon-and-rose garland columns with terracotta bows; large rose bouquet crown; pair of leaping stags flanking “La Folie” script; central berry-and-leaf wreath with blush rose bouquet; symmetrical acanthus-and-fern scroll base cartouche with rose accent; “1789” script

Sheet 6 – Jean-Baptiste Réveillon Medallion: two full-length climbing rose-and-berry garland columns; terracotta ribbon-and-bead swag crown; large berry-and-leaf wreath with central songbird and “Jean-Baptiste Réveillon · 1789·” script; two loose rose sprigs (left and right); large rose bouquet with terracotta ribbon bow and scrollwork base; “Palais Des Tuileries” script; four rose corner sprigs

Sheets 7 – 8 – Additional Compositions & Accent Elements: additional La Folie cartouche compositions, garland column variations, and individual accent elements (rose sprigs, berry clusters, scroll ornaments) for fill, repeat, and composition flexibility

Palette: warm terracotta, blush, deep rose, sage green, soft cream, and taupe — pairs beautifully with white, cream, warm grey, dusty sage, soft blue, or any neutral background

About IOD Paint Inlays

IOD Paint Inlays are the artisanal answer to decor transfers. They are not a decal; they are not a synthetic film; they are not decoupage. When you apply an IOD Paint Inlay, artisanal paint is embedded into your surface and the paper is removed, leaving an authentic painted design and a buttery, almost leather-like surface on your piece.

IOD Paint Inlays are made from a proprietary artist-quality paint which IOD formulated specifically for decorative use. They are organic in nature and the transfer of the painted design will be slightly varied and unique for each individual. The results are visually interesting, texturally complex, and often inherently distressed. The paint formula is ‘active’ until sealed — meaning you can manipulate it and apply special techniques or a custom touch before you seal your piece. And, as if once isn’t enough, you can often get a beautifully-faded second impression with the residual pigment on your ‘leftover’ Paint Inlay sheets — sometimes even a third impression!

How to Apply

Plan the layout of your designs on your surface.

Using the grids on the back side of the inlay sheet, trim as needed and set aside.

On an appropriately prepared surface, apply a generous and even coat of mineral-based chalk-type paint. Work in small sections to manage the paint-drying window, generally not larger than 12”×16”.

While paint is still wet, lay the paint inlay sheet design-side down into the wet paint, keeping it taut.

Spritz lightly with an even mist of water. Using a smooth damp sponge or folded soft cloth, pat down with even light pressure to make sure the design makes good contact. Avoid excessive moving or dragging.

Repeat steps 3–5 to complete your design, lining up sections as appropriate.

Allow to dry to the touch. Drying times can vary from 10 minutes to one hour depending upon conditions.

When ready to remove, spritz evenly with water and allow 30 seconds to absorb. Starting at one corner, gently pull the paper up at a low angle. Re-spritz and wait if it does not release easily.

If desired, use water to blend out or soften the design — the pigment remains movable and active until sealed.
